Flyin’ before drivin’

This girl is 15. I trusted my life in her hands today. See the video by clicking here or on the photo.

Real life

June 29, 2008

A few real life moments from Europe:

A few Barcelonians play futbol (or soccer, it’s whatever) with their dog on a dirt field.

A man looks out the window of a ferry as it approaches the Isle of Capri, Italy.

A girl’s umbrella shelters her from the rain and shuts out all the adults she is traveling with in Capri, Italy.

Documenting the set up

June 28, 2008

Tour groups take away most chances of being a “fly on the wall.” In photojournalism, that’s how we’re supposed to be. Slick, quiet, respectful and as least intrusive as possible. So throw about 44 other loud, curious folks into the mix, and you can quickly figure out how hard it can be to work as a photojournalist in a tour group.

I worked hard in Europe to slip off by myself, catch moments like the one above. This was on a boat on our way to Napoli, or Naples, Italy leaving Capri, Italy. The one below was right before free time ended in Florence, Italy.

There were times I felt like I was documenting the travelers, and not the natives. But I ended up with some decent photos of those situations too. The photo below is a normal situation that could be overlooked, but I liked the colors in the glass and the expressions of everyone.

Below you may say, “Ah a real moment.” But it’s a demonstration in Toledo, Spain. We were at a sword factory and what you can’t see is the woman who is basically next to me explaining what this fellow is doing. But I tried to take a photo of the nice light and the color in the hot metal.

I did documentary photography. I documented what it’s like for a tour group, and on the side made a few real photos too.

Scrap that

June 26, 2008

I’m pretty sure these aren’t going to run because David Stephenson found a guy who he will be following to see him collecting scrap. A) that sounds better than the drop off. B) Stephenson will out shoot me.

But for what was there, I’m pretty satisfied with these. All in a days work, it came around decent. But we do need someone actually searching for the scrap for the story, since it’s about the collection of scrap cleaning up the environment.

On a positive note my portfolio is now showing, but for some reasons I can’t get captions to pop up. I hope you enjoy this feature, while the rest of my site comes together.

Wet and Wild (Wednesdays)

June 25, 2008

Today was my first feature hunt day.

It started with geese and then more searching. Those weren’t good. Then I came back to the paper and had this suggestion. I went. I’m glad I went. Please let me know what you think, even if my comments are impossible to read (I’m working on that too).

Funny story about that photo: I used the same fish tank Jim Winn purchased and used during his Herald-Leader internship 100 years ago (as David Stephenson put it). Apparently Jim bought it for shooting muscles or something in a river, and I knew it was in there and had been waiting for a chance to use it. Today was that day.
