Engagement photos are all about showing a couple’s relationship together and capturing their personality. One of the most significant parts of that is shooting the ring, because it shows personality and is a symbol of their commitment. Without getting too mushy or cliche, all I’m saying is the ring shots are very important for engagement shoots.
I do my engagement shoots with the goal of making it as documentary as possible. I want to let the couple have fun together and then capture that, because then I have their personality and not just cheesy smiles. It’s the same reason I don’t do all the spot-coloring, funky toning and artsy Photoshop work.
To me, when you see those photos you say, “Oh, cool. That photographer worked hard on toning that picture,” but I hope you see my work and don’t think of me at all. I want it to be seamless, and for you to only think about the couple. It’s my responsibility as a photojournalist to present what is there and real. My goal is to creatively capture reality with my camera.
