Description

Dave is a kettlebell expert, and owns his own shop here in Louisville. The CJ is doing some kind of business profile on him, and I got the gig of shooting his portrait.

This portrait has one major flaw that’s driving me nuts: The weight machine behind him is coming through his head. I had him framed up to the right a bit, then the dog came over and it kind of got me distracted so when I worked him into the frame, I forgot to check everything else. The lighting was just a hair too hot on Dave, too. But overall I guess this is a success.

I’m using myself as a lesson more than anything, I guess. There’s no excuse for either of these problems when you do a portrait. Sure, this one still looks pretty good. But I was in complete control of this situation. I setup my chair, moved over all the kettlebells, put the grid on my light and it was going to be really cool. Then, being the dog lover I am, got distracted by Dave’s dog, Cash. It’s called “microcomposing,” and means you slowly work out all the kinks out of your frame.

Either way, I still liked this one. I think it will work well for what they needed. Read the article here.
