Sometimes you just stretch for the sake of stretching.

Mitchell Lancaster was a goofy Greek freshman all night on the first night of Fight Night. Then, thirty minutes before the fight, he turned into a machine. He was a guy I wouldn’t start a fight with – he whipped the crap out of two massive men.

He was nervous though. The second photo is of him juggling tape back and forth between his hands. he said it was the most nervous he has ever been in his life. Well warranted. It was the first fight of his life.

This brother kept the curtain peeked just a little so that Mitchell Lancaster could lay his eyes on the ring. Lancaster came out slugging and won his second fight of the event and won his weight class.

A few beers, one boxing ring and a little blood is all it takes to turn us into animals.

There will be a ton of boxing photos going on here. I shot so much. I definitely didn’t overshoot it, but I was there for a long time the first night and two hours the second night. If you’re a UK student and kicking yourself for not shooting “Fight Night,” you should be.

I was mostly looking for what makes this “Fight Night” and not what makes this event boxing. There is a difference. “Fight Night” is students wanting to box, training for a few weeks and then duking it out. Don’t get me wrong, there wasn’t a single guy there I would have stepped in the ring with – they were all hard fighters. But being a boxer takes way more than this. So, the conclusion we made from my take the other night was that I had good boxing pictures, and not good “Fight Night” pictures.

The photo above does everything Chris and Jim said I was lacking. It has the mood, the student aspect and the boxing I was originally shooting. If you want to argue you can’t tell this is amateur, how many boxers get ready in a room full of saw dust? Horses trot through here more than boxers. I like this photo a lot.

It’s Mates of State’s Jason Hammel. Allie and I went to their show at the Dame last night – which had a terrible turnout by the way – and it was really fun. I was really impressed with their sound since they only have two people (husband and wife duos usually do).

Sometimes you take a photo to tell another person’s story. Others you take it to take it simply to capture the moment. Some people even take pictures simply to make money.

But every now and then, you get to take a photo because you want to. And even if you’re the only one who really gets any emotional release or benefit, it’s necessary. This is one of those pictures. I just like it. And don’t really care if it tells you a story.

Although, I need to get working on a few of those as well. And if that’s your criticism, I’ll take it.
